DOGO News

Posted on | January 21, 2012 | Comments Off

While teaching my students to add to their Weebly pages, I wanted them to add current events and news to their page.  Weebly has the function where students can add html code and DOGO News has a link that gives them the code for various articles.  My students are able to copy the code for their chosen article and add it to their Weebly page.

DOGOnews is an online newspaper and web guide for children. ”DOGO” (not Do-Go), means young or small in Swahili.  Their goal is to provide a fun, safe and interactive environment for children to read and learn about interesting current events. Their  news articles are short, simple and include photos/videos in order to keep children focused and interested. They also augment their content with an integrated dictionary for challenging words and maps for geographical context.

Weebly, Edmodo, and Gaggle

This year I have added Edmodo do our repertoire of tech usage.  I absolutely love it.  In the past, I relied on Gaggle to communicate with my students via the internet but since I was using the free version, it was a little too busy looking and confusing for my students.  Once they caught on to Edmodo, the class is loving it.  I post assignments, which usually involves something we are doing in class.  They love the “badges” they are awarded when completing an assignment.  Some are getting pretty competitive on who is earning the most badges.  I also name a “Weebly Page of the Week” on our Edmodo page.

Weebly is also a hit this year.  It’s a tool where the students can create their own web page and blog.  What I like most about it is that their sites are password protected and I also have it set where all comments to their blogs must be approved by me first.  You can see our class Weebly page at http://fineskids.weebly.com  It has great tools and they are learning to add plug-ins to make it more interesting.  There are many free games online that are kid friendly that include their html code.  My students are learning how to add a game to customize their site.  Also, they have found a great news feed – dogonews – more about that later where they can add news to their site.

Weebly

I came across this website creator – Weebly.com – and they have an education version.  I touched on it a few weeks ago with a few of my students and they loved it but then they pulled our old computers out of the lab (they were way outdated) and we were without a lab for quiet awhile.  We now have ten brand new Dells and this week we are going back to this great tool.  The nice thing is that it is free, password protected, and fully controlled by the teacher.  Watch for more information later.

Cool Tools

I have followed teacher, Laura Candler, for several years and she has some great ideas to share with her fellow teachers.

Recently, we received some much needed updated technology.  We were working with Compaqs from 1999 that had Windows 98 on them.  Our new superintendent is a real believer in the use of technology with our students and we are getting brand new Dells, Promethean Boards, Activotes, Slates, and document cameras.

I love these tools -
